the drop shadow

Now it’s time to paint a drop shadow. This will ground the image, making it look even more real. The drop shadow must be painted lightly with smooth, even transitions.

Use a large, clean brush for this step. The larger the brush, the more evenly you can apply the paint. Coat the brush with as much black paint as you can. Rub each side of the paintbrush on a piece of rough paper until the brush transfers just a slight amount of paint to the paper. The brush should now be mostly dry.

Once again, paint the darkest areas first, and then move to the slightly lighter areas. As you work, the brush will gradually contain less paint. Now paint the lighter sections. This will create a smooth transition between dark and light.

A good drop shadow is an important part of creating a successful 3D effect.
